WebJun 6, 2024 · Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.). Walp) is an important leguminous vegetable crop mainly grown both in kharif and spring summer season crop in most parts of India. It is a self pollinated crop with a chromosome no. 2n=2x= 22. Cowpea belongs to the family Leguminaseae genus vigna, subfamily Websuppression (Clark, 2007). Although cowpea is known to be a quick-growing weed-fighter, it is less successful at suppressing perennial grasses, so cultivation of rows may be required for weed control when it is grown for dry seed. Because cowpea can grow on nutrient poor soils and fix its own nitrogen, no nitrogen fertilizer is required.
